How To Structure A Dissertation In The MLA Format: Useful Tips

The most popular style of writing a dissertation the is MLA format. It’s because it is considered as an academic format of writing papers. It is your final paper and it has to be perfect, so there is no space for mistakes, not only regarding the content, but also regarding the format of the paper. You have to meet those requirements that MLA format has. It has to clear, concise and show your knowledge of the topic, as well of the latest MLA format guidelines.

Definition of MLA format style

MLA style is a simple format guideline for writing paper within the field of humanities and other academic fields. There are two simple and basic rules:

  1. Be brief with the parenthetical citations within the text.
  2. Order the works in alphabetical order and put it on the final page of the paper.

This is not everything for sure, but these are the most important rules you have to bear in mind when writing in MLA format. Do not use other Italics, Bold, or Underlined style of writing

You do feel the need to emphasize something within the paper, but resist your nature and use normal font. Format tips

  • Arial or Times New Roman, minimum 11 font size
  • Left margin justified text
  • Top, bottom, left and right margin should be 1’’
  • Double spacing throughout the paper
  • 0.5’’ indented first word of paragraph
  • No title page. Use the left top side of the first page, for your name, your instructor’s name, the number of the course, and the date. All on separate line.
  • Center the title on the first page. Not bold, italicized, underlined or capitalized, write it in normal font.
  • Page numbers are 0.5’’ far from the top, in the right top corner.
  • Check twice for grammar, punctuation and spelling throughout the paper.
